Why did you start looking for a coach?

I first started thinking about getting a coach as I saw this AI legal apocalypse on the horizon, and I knew that I needed more firepower. I needed to fully disrupt my own law firm to be able to thrive in the AI era.

What did the work focus on?

We had to go from, this is how you write great patent applications, to, this is how you make great decisions. This was a huge part of my work with my coach.

How did you choose your coach?

I met with three different potential coaches, and one of them I really clicked with quite a bit.

What does a coach give you that your network doesn't?

I'm surrounded by a lot of great entrepreneurs, and they all have great advice. But there's something really special about having a coach who's going to push back and really help you uncover the truth of a situation.

What did your coach help you understand?

In patent strategy and early-stage investing, I'm being asked to make decisions before something is technically feasible, before something is commercially proven. The core underlying skill is the same — trying to understand value before the market truly understands it. This is what my Titan coach helped me understand.

What would you tell the founders you work with?

Each of those founders is going through a transformation almost annually. To hyperscale a startup is a series of massive transformations, and I would highly encourage them to get a coach as soon as they can.

Jeff Schox, Founder and CEO of Schox Patent Group, in conversation with Titan. Lightly edited for clarity.

What Schox Patent Group does

I'm Jeffrey Schox. I'm the founder and CEO of Schox Patent Group. We develop patent strategies and build patent portfolios for frontier tech startups.

Why AI is a clarifying moment

The legal apocalypse is coming. AI is coming very hard for the legal field, and for many patent attorneys, this is a pretty scary moment. For us, it's clarifying. We've had an unbelievable string of unicorns come to us at the very, very early stage, whether this is Twilio or Cruise or Duo or Coinbase or Joby. All of these companies have come to us very early on to be able to say, this is our technology, can you help us protect it? Twilio actually launched from my office. I was the one who ordered them pizza for the evening after their launch.

Why he sought a coach

I first started thinking about getting a coach as I saw this AI legal apocalypse on the horizon, and I knew that I needed more firepower. I needed to fully disrupt my own law firm to be able to thrive in the AI era. We had to go from, this is how you write great patent applications, to, this is how you make great decisions. This was a huge part of my work with my coach.

Choosing a Titan coach

I love my Titan coach. I met with three different potential coaches, and one of them I really clicked with quite a bit. I'm surrounded by a lot of great entrepreneurs, and they all have great advice. But there's something really special about having a coach who's going to push back and really help you uncover the truth of a situation.

Patent attorney or venture capitalist?

People often ask, am I a patent attorney or a venture capitalist? My law firm has filed thousands of patent applications, and my venture funds have made hundreds of early-stage investments. In patent strategy and early-stage investing, I'm being asked to make decisions before something is technically feasible, before something is commercially proven. The core underlying skill is the same — trying to understand value before the market truly understands it. These two skills are the same underneath, and this is what my Titan coach helped me understand.

Creating a new category

Schox Patent Group is creating a new category. We're developing the patent strategy, building the patent portfolios, and investing in these companies to empower them to move forward. Schox Patent Group has worked with over 500 startups over the years, and they've raised collectively over $10 billion.

Why every founder should have a coach

When I look at our clients, our startups, and my investments, each of those founders is going through a transformation almost annually. To hyperscale a startup is a series of massive transformations, and I would highly encourage them to get a coach as soon as they can. Everyone should have a Titan coach.

About Titan

What is Titan?

Titan matches Series A to C founders with the best founder coaches in the world. Titan interviews each founder, then introduces them to coaches from a network of 48 who have either built an outlier company themselves or coached the founders who did. Titan is currently working with 250+ Series A to C founders of companies including Wispr, Pylon, Nooks, Attention, OpenRouter, ComfyUI, OpusClip, Unify, Mirage, Bretton and ZBiotics.

Who are Titan's coaches?

Titan interviewed more than 1,600 coaches over eight years and accepts fewer than 3%. Titan's coaches have all either "done it themselves", meaning they built a VC-backed startup to $100M+ ARR or a $300M+ exit, or "seen it done well", meaning they coached at least 6 founders from Series A to unicorn. Many meet both. Success stories of Titan's coaches include the founders of Figma, Notion, Plaid, Rippling, Superhuman, Oura, Instagram, LinkedIn and Asana, all coached between their Series A and Series C.

How does Titan match a founder with a coach?

Titan starts with a one-hour discovery call, then matches on experience (outlier success at a similar stage, industry and role), modality (whether the coach's approach fits the founder's most important problems) and personality (for example questions or answers, cheerleader or challenger). The founder reviews three coach matches, does trial sessions with two of them, and begins an engagement with one. 98% of the founders Titan places stay with their coach for 12 months or longer.

What does working with a Titan coach include?

All Titan coaches offer weekly or biweekly sessions plus unlimited support between sessions by text, call or email, as part of a monthly retainer. Founders can switch coaches at any time, and the matching is a concierge service: Titan does the vetting and the introductions.

What do founders work on with a Titan coach?

Founders typically work through eight areas with their coach: setting a clear strategy, building a team of A players, keeping everyone aligned (including co-founders), setting clear expectations and having hard conversations, creating a culture of accountability, getting visibility and trust so the company runs without them, protecting time and energy to avoid burnout, and finding their own leadership style.

How is Titan different from other executive coaching?

Most coaching platforms optimize for the size of their network. Titan is process agnostic and outcomes obsessed: it does not teach one methodology, and for every coach it collects the before-and-after financials of the companies they built or coached. Each match recommendation draws on that track record, not on an intake call.

What happens when a company outgrows its coach?

Switching coaches at Titan is always free. Top founders change coaches every 12 to 24 months, because the problems a founder faces at Series A are different from the ones at Series C. Titan re-matches founders with the right coach as their company's stage changes.

What results do founders see with Titan?

Tanay Kothari, CEO of Wispr Flow, grew his team 7x and revenue 150x in a year while working with his Titan coach. Young Zhao, CEO of OpusClip, grew ARR 5.5x in a year. More founder stories are at withtitan.com/founders.

Who is behind Titan?

Titan was founded by AJ Goldstein, an early data scientist at Calm, Oura and Akili, and Dave McGibbon, who founded Passbase (raised $17M, acquired in 2023) after five years at Alphabet and Google X. Investors include Brad Bao (founder of Lime), Irene Au, Bradley Horowitz and Jure Leskovec. Titan is operated by Aware Healthcare Inc.
